New computer Win 8.1 set up debacle

Hi, Not sure if this is a discussion or a question, or a out and out venting of frustration! Just received my new inspiron 17 laptop. Had to go through a Dell based set up process (ie computer name, wifi, etc etc) including an account password (with password hint) before being presented with the Windows 8.1 Start screen. When I tried to set up my email by clicking on the "mail" tile in the Start screen I was led me into a whole process of setting up a "Microsoft account". I was never presented with an option to create a "local only" account but had read somewhere that I could disconnect from MS account to create a local one later. To finalise my MS account, I was requested to respond to the email sent to the associated account email, which is kinda hard to do when you haven't set your email up, so I selected the "I can't do this at the moment" option. So after this I changed my account to local only - putting in a new password , after which I was told I would have re-login. Foolishly enough I said "yes" to the relogin in (unknowingly disrupting a large download the was half way through downloading - grrr). At this stage I was asked for the password and the hint I was presented with was the one set up in the initial Dell base set up! This password didn't work, but the local account password did - this seems like a bug or I am completely confused (which I am). I thought the MS account was for login into the MS account stuff (like MS store, skydrive etc) like one would do when signing in to say, an online email account, but not my personal computer log in - what gives?? Are these logins/accounts the same as the users in Windows 7? And what happened to the initial set up password? And why can't someone set their email up without having to respond to an email?? Can I sign into MS account based apps on the fly without having to login in under a MS account? Regards, JamGou
