Bought a second HDD for my XPS 8300. I used Acronis True Image Home 2011 to first backup my original disk. I then shutdown, switched power and SATA cables to new drive, and did a restore using Acronis (my 12.2G Recovery partition was indeed restored also). The overall restore was successful and I was able to get into Windows and everything appears to be fine...
However, when I do a restart and "F8" to my Advanced Boot Options and select "Repair your Computer" it fails with the error message:
"Windows failed to start. Recent hardware or software changes may be the cause...etcetc" It then tells me to alternatively try Windows installation disc, etcetc.
I'm aware I can do a fresh reload using the disks I have - I would prefer to be able to restore to factory settings. FYI, I'm doing this for 2 reasons: (1) my "System Restore" capability is broken and I want it back, and (2), one of my favorite, frequently used programs broke suddently and I want to use the second disk to try and determine why.
BTW, I can get to the Repair your Computer menu items using my original disk, so it would appear my Recovery partition is not corrupt(?).
Can anyone tell me:
1. Is this a known issue with Acronis, i.e., it simply doesn't backup or restore everything I need?
2. Does anyone know if the "clone" feature in Acronis is any better? (I currently don't have an extra SATA cable)
3. Will Dell DataSafe do the backup/restore any better?
Thanks for whatever you can tell me.
Joe
