Hello everyone!
I recently got a XPS 18, which is also my first Encounter with Windows 8 (8.1).
I'm getting slowly used to it...
However, I have a question regarding the EFI-Partition. I have assigned certain drive letters to various USB-drives (Virtual Drive is V:, Music Videos HDD is M:, Games are on G:, Data is on D: and so on...). Data is a separate internal HDD which I added on the vacant SATA-III Connection, as the main SDD is on the M.2 (NGFF), so drive D: is always there.
They all work fine, except that my main External HDD always used to be E:/ ... drive letter is important as I have a few programs that use shortcuts and links to E:/...
When I connected this external HDD, it showed up as J:, and I went to Disk Management and changed the letter to E. A message popped up that this letter was already in use, but could be changed (after all, E was still available in the Dropdown menu). So now the HDD was available under E:/. Fine! But the Computer did not remember the drive letter for this particular HDD.
Later, when the external HDD was not connected, I found out (via Directory browser of an installer of some program) that the (invisible) EFI-Partition actually uses the E letter!! This was also the reason why some EXE-files (installers that I have on the external HDD) didn't work, claiming that the path was not found when I used the External HDD with the letter E!
So, the ultimate question is: Can I Change the drive letter of the EFI-Partition without damaging the System (say, to Z)? (Of course, this cannot be done with the standard Disk Management tool. mountvol? Paragon Partition Manager?)
Unfortunately I do not know if the EFI-Partition had another letter (D:/) before I installed the second drive on the SATA-III port
